Blog Tour & Giveaway: Breaking Nova by Jessica Sorensen

Nova Reed used to have dreams-of becoming a famous drummer, of marrying her true love. But all of that was taken away in an instant. Now she's getting by as best she can, though sometimes that means doing things the old Nova would never do. Things that are slowly eating away at her spirit. Every day blends into the next . . . until she meets Quinton Carter. His intense, honey brown eyes instantly draw her in, and he looks just about as broken as she feels inside.

Quinton once got a second chance at life-but he doesn't want it. The tattoos on his chest are a constant reminder of what he's done, what he's lost. He's sworn to never allow happiness into his life . . . but then beautiful, sweet Nova makes him smile. He knows he's too damaged to get close to her, yet she's the only one who can make him feel alive again. Quinton will have to decide: does he deserve to start over? Or should he pay for his past forever?

My Review:

Breaking Nova is a raw and emotional read about characters broken by circumstances out of their control. The compelling characters are two people, trying to understand and fix each other, while being haunted by their own pasts. It’s a story of those who are left behind when loved ones leave them. The feelings and unanswered questions of “why” and the guilt of “why wasn’t it me?”

This book takes place over one summer after Nova Reed returns home from her freshman year at college. Numb to her pain is how she is coping, but not really dealing with her problems. She has survived an extremely painful experience by building walls around herself, not letting anyone truly know her. When she meets, Quinton Carter, a quiet and withdrawn new face to their town, she is pulled to him. Not only does he remind her of her painful past, that she is trying to avoid, there is a sadness  in him that she wants to so desperately fix.

Quinton is drawn to Nova also, as much as he tries to fight it. She reminds him of a happier time in his life. But there are legitimate obstacles that lie in their way to happiness, mostly inner demons on both their parts. Can they both emerge from the rubble that has become their lives?

You need to be a “big girl” for this one, but you won’t regret the experience that you will have. It is real, honest, and healing. I can deal with a tough subject matter if it has a coming of age theme. That’s the journey that I want from a good book, and I got it from Breaking Nova. It won’t be tied up in a completely perfect bow, because there is still more to this story to be told in the next book. I am completely fine with where this story left me, but I  look forward to reading its follow up. Read this one now, you will be fine.

This was the first book that I’ve read by this author, and the writing is as good as I had anticipated.  She never insults her reader by beating you over the head with her intentions. They are subtle, but clear. The settings: gritty, real, and tangible. She writes the characters movements and actions, just as a movie would play out, with finesse and authenticity.
