Review: Hot Mess by Lynn Raye Harris

Hostile Operations Team is a group of alpha-men in uniform who do highly secretive and dangerous things to protect the US. They’re also hot and falling in love! For some reason, they can drop behind enemy lines, take out the bad guys and never get worried. Yet, when faced with a woman they love, they become fraidy cats!

Georganne has been in love with Sam for years and years. In fact, she’s been in love with him since she was 12 years old. Now, it’s 18 years later and he’s coming back in her life. This time it’s to keep her safe.

When they’re thrown together in a safe house the sparks fly. Georganne wants Sam. Sam, bless his heart, can’t resist her.

I did get irritated with Sam. He’s the poor kid from the wrong side of town. Even though, Georganne’s family never thought of him like that, he still does. He won’t let it go.

Georganne was the right mix of independent woman with a bit of vulnerability. She was willing to fight for what she wanted, Sam. Sam was trying to do what he thought was right. He just needs to get his head out of his ass. He did end up being a jerk at times to her, but he did apologize. He was definitely a Hot Mess.

There wasn’t a lot of conflict in this one. It is a relatively short story, so it’s not surprising there wasn’t much conflict.  I did miss the added tension of car chases and things blowing up, but that’s just me.

I’m really excited about this series and I’m looking forward to more of them!

Review: Wishes in Her Eyes by D.L. Uhlrich

Wishes in Her Eyes is a short story about romance in the work place.

Harper has lusted over Stone for quite a while. The problem? They work together. Plus, she doesn’t think hot and hunky Stone would be into a plus-sized woman. Boy, is she wrong!

A stormy night, a flat tire and the game is on! Stone makes his move and Harper decides to take a chance and enjoy the ride.

This was an enjoyable short story. (very short) The story is told from Harper’s POV. It’s first-person so we never get Stone’s perspective or thoughts on the events.

I enjoyed this quick read. It’s a straightforward romance with characters who are in their 40’s (I like). Harper is a plus-sized woman (I like). Stone is a romantic at heart (I like). They’re both willing to take a chance on the other (I like).

Now, I feel I have to tell you this is a mixed-race couple. This doesn’t matter to me. As long as I like the characters, I couldn’t care what race they are. However, I know there are some readers who do care.

One final note, we should all have a friend like Harper’s friend Darry!  He’s a riot and will lighten up any mood!

Review: Mastering Kyla by Aubrey Stone

Mastering Kyla is a wonderfully sweet story about a woman finding her true self. After being left at the alter by her fiancé, Kyla runs into a friend from college. He seduces her and introduces her to submission.

Jackson is perfect. He’s too perfect. The man has no flaws! We should all be so lucky to find a man like Jackson.

Kyla is sweet, a little too innocent and just what Jackson needs, just like Jackson is what Kyla needs.  These two are actually perfect for each other.

This is a pretty short story, only around 50 pages. While it is very short, it’s packed with a lot emotion and quite a bit of hot and steamy sex. As usual with short stories, my biggest complaint is the lack of character development. While I got a pretty good feel for Kyla, I had a harder time getting a feel for Jackson. On the surface he seemed perfect. But no matter how perfect he felt, I couldn’t figure out what drove him. Why he was the way he was. Even lacking that development, it was a good story!
