Blog Tour and Giveaway: Second Nature (When Seconds Count #2) by D. L. Roan

WARNING: Second Nature is a contemporary erotic romance and contains explicit sexual content, adult language and graphic violence. Recommended for the adult reader only. While Grant’s story can certainly be enjoyed on its own, the author recommends becoming better acquainted with him and his journey by experiencing his debut in Second Chances (When Seconds Count, #1)

Grant Kendal has spent his life hunting the shadows of evil. He can feel it changing him; twisting him into the very thing he despises; a mindless killer.

Thalia Brezlin is a marked woman, hell-bent on revenge. She is haunted by the nightmares of her past. A past that lies in wait to destroy her. When she washes ashore Grant’s desolate island of exile, beaten, stabbed and clinging to life, their worlds collide.

Follow them across Africa, Madagascar and India into the underworld of human trafficking. Where innocence isn’t lost, it’s stolen.

Passion will rage, rules will be broken, lives will be shattered and the truth will be revealed. Survival is Second Nature.

Excerpt:

Even though she didn’t want to need his help, she did. He hadn’t asked one thing of her in return yet. The least she could do would be to keep her mouth shut. When he rounded the front of the car and opened her door, she couldn’t bring herself to look at him, focusing instead on the suddenly interesting crushed soda can on the floor at her feet. “You’re good at it, you know.”

“I’m good at a lot of things, sweetheart.” He unceremoniously unbuckled her seat belt and scooped her from the front seat. “I don’t need you to tell me that.”

She pounded her fist on his shoulder as he walked to the only visible door into the building. “I was talking about being nice!” She pushed against his hold on her but got nowhere fast, as usual. “I was trying to be nice, you jerk!”

Grant stopped in his tracks and peered down at her, his amber eyes searching hers. Searching for what she had no clue, but damn if that panty-melting fire in his eyes didn’t cut right through the bullshit in her brain. “You really think I’m good at being nice?”

Thalia forced herself to look away. “I take it back. You totally suck at being anything but an asshole!”

He studied her, a big goofy grin on his face. “I think you like me, fossa.” Heat flushed her cheeks; heat having nothing to do with her infection or fever. You should have just kept your big mouth shut!

Grant continued to the door, still holding her cradled in his arms. “You hate needing my help, but,” he reached up and pounded three times on the door, then three more, “I think you like me and you don’t know what to do with that.”

When no one answered he carefully sat her on her feet. “Okay, Captain Psychology, what does this mean?” She elbowed him in the gut, extracting a satisfying groan.

Grant recovered and struck with the stealth of a panther. Lacing his fingers into her hair he pulled her head back, forcing her to look at him. His breath billowed out, hot and moist against the shell of her ear as he leaned in and spoke with a growl. “It means my little fossa, that as soon as I get you someplace safe and your leg is healed, I’m going to bend you over and spank that smart ass of yours.”

Thalia froze, unwanted images of being naked and on display flashed through her mind. His heavy hand splayed across her ass and she could almost imagine the sharp bite of erotic pain. Grant’s hot tongue slipped out and traced along the outer shell of her ear, sending a tingling blanket of electricity dancing along her skin as he sucked on her sensitive lobe.

“Then I’m going to fuck you.” He turned her face and kissed along her jaw. “Long,” he sighed, the tip of his tongue tickling the corner of her mouth. “And hard,” he said in a low, baritone whisper just before his hand tightened in her hair and he crushed his mouth to hers. Devouring her, his tongue rushed along hers in long, demanding strokes like a prophet to his promise.
My Review:

Grant is just trying to move on and escape the demons that his profession has left behind and he wants to do it on his island.  After his last “job” as a favor to his friend he needs this time to himself.  When he meets Thalia, not only is the peace on his island disturbed, he knows that she is going to be trouble but can’t stop helping her anyways.  Little does he know that there is more to Thalia and her past that she even knows.  When pieces of her past come to light, he is torn.  He knows that when she learns certain truths about his past and hers she may hate him forever.

Thalia, is out for vengeance against the man who killed her uncle.  While on the run she ends up on Grant’s island and while the man makes her insane she cannot deny the attraction she feels for him.  There is so much more going on than what Thalia knows, parts of her past that she can’t remember and truths that will make her question everything she has believed to be true with the actual truth.  Can she accept Grant and his past or will she only use him to help her survive?

When we first met Grant in Second Chances, he was there to do a job and he wasn’t my favorite character at all.  You didn’t get to see the other side of Grant like you do in Second Nature.  There is so much more to him.  I fell in love with Grant after the first couple of chapters.  I really loved how protective of Thalia he was even from the start when she was being a massive bitch to him.  He didn’t back down and was determined to find out who she really was.  He is alpha and dominate and the perfect man and protector that Thalia needs.

Thalia has gone through hell, but, she doesn’t actually remember a lot of what has happened to her.  She is hell bent on vengeance for her uncle.  When she finds out the truth about the man she called uncle I actually felt bad for her because you could tell she was torn about what she knew and what he also was.  While she was a massive and ungrateful bitch at times to Grant, once she let her guard down and him into her heart I really began to like her.  When she finds out information about her past, my heart broke for her.  No one should have gone through what she did.

I have really enjoyed this series so far, it’s erotic, it has suspense, romance and action.  I really hope that this series continues.  D.L Roan has made me want to pick up more suspense thrillers with this series.  If you like this type of book I would recommend you don’t delay in reading the When Seconds Count series, starting with book one, Second Chances, and then reading Second Nature so you know the background and characters better.

About the Author

D.L. Roan lives and writes in her "beautifully wild and southern" home state of Florida with her "perfectly flawed hero" husband and two 80lb lap dogs.

Completely addicted to the written word, she's had a brood of characters residing inside her imagination for as long as she could remember. Being able to bring them to life and let them out to play has been a life's dream fulfilled.

Romance has always been her favored genre. While erotica is her favored spicy flavor, she also enjoys paranormal fantasy and has been known to stalk the work of certain historical romance writers.

In addition to exorcizing her characters' lusts, D.L. enjoys scuba diving, fishing, and sitting by a bonfire on a starry night. She loves to hear from her fans so check her out on Facebook or send her a tweet.

Blog Tour & Giveaway: ONE TINY SECRET by Adam Kunz

Just one tiny secret has the potential to ruin everything.

Being the daughter of the sheriff in a small town like Holden Ridge means that eighteen-year-old Danielle “Dani” Marks’ life is under constant surveillance. She’s made a habit of staying under the radar by being a floater among social circles at school, which has kept her out of trouble—until now.

After a missing persons case stirs up the entire town, Dani finds herself caught right in the middle of the scandal. When she’s labeled a possible suspect, things quickly go from bad to worse. The sudden return of her old flame, Parker Reed, manages to make her whole situation even more complicated.

When an elusive unknown person begins to blackmail Dani by threatening to reveal her deepest secrets, Dani refuses to play along. That is, until the person’s actions take a violent turn. Holden Ridge loses its sense of quaint town security, and Dani is caught in a deadly game of cat and mouse.

Who can she trust when anyone around her could be a suspect?

One thing’s for certain though: Never underestimate the power of one tiny secret.

REVIEW:
This one is F.U.N. Okay now wait until you hear what this one is about. You're going to think I'm a sick f%$@ to refer to a slasher thriller as fun, but it is. I'm not the first to notice that this book feels like the movies, Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer. So if you enjoyed those movies, where no character is safe, and the cemetery will be full by the end of the movie/book, then this is your next read. That sounded macabre, but I love to keep guessing and screaming, "NO! You can't off that person!" No one is safe in this book and I was on the edge of my seat. You just know when that person shouldn't peer into their dark closet investigating that mysterious sound. BUT IT'S JUST TOO MUCH FUN. I'm sick, right??

This is a great read for when you are cozy in your bed late at night. You will fly through it, because the suspense will keep you turning the pages. I will be rereading this one around Halloween for sure! Adam Kunz paints the picture perfectly of a gusty harvest moon night, that had me forgetting that I am currently in the middle of a hot summer. With the exception of some repetitive phrases that had me rolling my eyes, saying enough with that one already, the writing is very good. I'm pretty sure you could make a drinking game that every time that you read the word "pumpkin ale", to take a drink. But all joking aside, if that's all I can fault this book with, then that is pretty damn good. I really did like this author's writing style. It used the right amount of description that put me right there in the scene with the characters. I was on edge and nervous. The dialogue is believable for characters in their late teens and early twenties, and had a lot of humor that kept me laughing.

The main character Dani is the right mix of sassy and smart. She has an interesting past and doesn't trust many people to help her with her problems in this book. Along with the suspense, there is a romance that is being rekindled. The only person that she has to help her put the pieces of the mystery together is her former flame, Parker Reed. Parker plays the part of the hottie ex trying to make amends for past mistakes with Dani. He is the only person that she can trust in this book, which considering their history, is ironic. The large supporting cast of characters are great and very well developed. They are a diverse group of people that keep things interesting.

One Tiny Secret feels like a Young Adult genre book at the beginning, because the characters are in high school, but that's where it ends. This book moves quickly into the New Adult category with its subject matter that is listed in the warning. The high school kids are having secret parties, hanging out in bars, and having sex with college students. This isn't a negative. It was good, and added a little edge to the story. I liked it and it worked for me. Compared to what I usually read, this was a very tame book. This is the first book that I have read from Adam Kunz. I really like how he developed the story and characters' relationships. I would highly recommend that you check this one out if you are looking for a fun and scary read.
