Review: Fighting The Fall By JB Salsbury

The toughest fighters aren’t created in the octagon but are born of necessity. When life delivers blow after punishing blow, you fight back or get destroyed.

Eve Dawson has had her fill of bad luck. A string of unhealthy relationships has left her angry, bitter, and frustrated. She’s given up on being happy and settles for content. Swearing off men, she repels advances and makes herself a challenge to even the most persistent suitors. After all, how much can the fragile human heart take? But life isn’t finished with her, and when things can’t possibly get worse . . . they do.

Stay on your feet.

It’s Cameron Kyle’s motto, but with his fighting career ripped from his grasp, a child he wasn’t strong enough to save, and a marriage that even the brawn of a heavyweight couldn’t hold together, it’s getting harder and harder to stay upright. He takes on the position of CEO of the UFL, intent on hiding his biggest weakness in order to forge a path that leads him back into the octagon.

When an old rival mysteriously gets wind of Cameron’s plan to fight again, he comes out of retirement to settle old debts, but secrets, lies, and betrayal threaten to deliver the death-blow. The distraction of a sass-mouthed girl seventeen years his junior is the last thing he needs until a tragic accident shatters the firm foundation of his resolve and he realizes just how far he’s fallen.

Will they risk it all and fight to be together?

Or does defeat lie within the fall?

I hate to even say this but for me, Fighting The Fall is my least favorite of the series so far.  Don’t get me wrong I did like it but I think after such an emotional book as Fighting To Forget was that Fighting The Fall just didn’t come to that same level of greatness.

We first meet Eve in Fighting The Flight.  She is Raven’s best friend and hasn’t had the best luck when it comes to relationships.  She didn’t have the best life growing up and she almost accepted that being treated like shit was acceptable and almost a given.  The emotional abuse she suffered made her the way she is.  I think it was her not seeing her own worth and even being extremely immature at times is what kept me from liking her like I have the rest of the women in this series.

Cam’s past is filled with a different kind of pain.  He had to give up fighting because of the risk of another concussion being life threatening as well as other reasons he is determined to work hard and get in the ring no matter what the cost.  Sadly something tragic happens and causes a whole type of pain to occur.  I can’t imagine what Cam was living through or feeling, something like that would have killed me that I wouldn’t have been able to go on.  While I feel deeply for Cam his treatment of Eve is inexcusable at times and didn’t really prove to me as a reader that he was worth forgiveness.

While this may not have been my favorite of the series so far, this was still emotional and at times heartbreaking.  Emotional abuse is something that is real, words can’t ever be unsaid and when those words beat you down emotionally the damage caused can be unrepairable.  Fighting The Fall is the fourth book in this series and will make you want to repair any damage your words may have caused someone in the past.

Blog Tour: Fall Out Girl By L. Duarte

Imagine a social outcast: Me. (Luna)
Imagine a popular boy: Him. (Caleb)
Sound like the characters of a cliché story, right? Here, hold my hand. Come away with me. I’ll tell you my story, and you’ll decide.
But I have a warning: Proceed at your own risk.  Since it’s a snippet of my life, I’m one of the main characters. And to put it lightly, I’m not the most likable person in the world, cue the earned label.  Also, unlike fairy tales, my story is real with a dash of sorrow and loss.
How do I start? Once upon a time…? Shoot me now, please.
The beginning? No, too boring.
Well, let’s start with the catalytic moment that set in motion a chain of events that changed my life, yet again.
As for a happily ever after? Sorry, no spoilers here. You’re going to have to figure that one out on your own. After you read my tale, it becomes yours, and as such, you’re entitled to your interpretation.
So, off we go!
Fasten your seat belts. This ride may get bumpy.
AUTHOR’S NOTE: Due to strong language and graphic sexual content, this book is not intended for readers under the age of 18.
I’m not exactly sure what to say about Fall Out Girl to be honest.  I started out really liking it even with the young adult type of feel I was getting at times, but then it just went down fast.  Luna’s character just kind of called to me.  I could tell that under her hard ass bitch attitude that there was more to her, slowly and slowly that hard exterior breaks and it is because of Caleb.  Luna is a drug dealer but before you judge her, I have always believed that you have to do what you have to do to survive.  For her and her cousin, she did what she had to do to survive and while what she did was illegal it came from a good place in her heart.  I loved Caleb from the start but then, I really wanted to just punch him in the balls because he not only crushed Luna’s heart, he stomped on the fragileness of the true Luna.

So I am sure you are wondering why I didn’t love it if I felt those emotions I just told you about.  Here is why.  I understand plot twists and the need to keep your readers on the edge of your seat but if you don’t do it correctly then you will lose your reader’s attention and sadly that is what happened with me.  I should have expected what happened but I had really hoped there would be more to it.  Hell I can even understand why it happened but it for some reason just pissed me off something fierce.  I am not saying that I didn’t like this book, I did I just didn’t love it and felt a little let down.  But I want you to form your own opinion, maybe it is a case of its not the book it’s me, which happens more than one would think.  I will say this, I hope that there will be another book to maybe expand on what we have already read as well as go into the future if that makes sense.  So give Fall Out Girl a chance, I am glad I did even with what didn’t work for me.

Meet the Author

I have found that there is only one thing better than reading, and that is writing. I’m always torn between the two. I’m also frequently torn between chocolate and coffee. However, I emphatically don’t like the month of February, lies, and flies. For me, bravery is defined by the courage to do what we fear the most. I live in Connecticut with my husband and two children. Drop a few lines. I would love to hear from you.

Blog Tour: Consolation By Corinne Michaels

Liam wasn’t supposed to be my happily ever after.
He wasn’t even on my radar.
He was my husband’s best friend—forbidden.

But my husband is dead and I’m alone. I ache for him and I reach for Liam.

One night with Liam changed everything. Now I have to decide if I truly love him or if he’s just the consolation prize.

****************************************************

When I started reading Consolation, I originally started to read it based on the military element alone.  Obviously I have a soft spot in my heart for military heroes and military themed books if you haven’t noticed in previous reviews.  What I didn’t anticipate was that from the first page until the last I would be so drawn into Natalie’s pain from the death of her husband and the connection that she and Liam shared from the start, even if it was just a friendship.

I was at the edge of my seat wondering and waiting for them to finally be together even when a silent shit storm was forming around them that no one could ever see coming.  Let me just say that ending?  Yeah my kindle may or may not have bounced off my bedroom wall after reading that.  I will not say what happens but man that was not what I thought was coming after everything else that had happened up until that point.

I love how Liam and Natalie are together and their banter back and forth is hilarious.  Natalie deserves happiness and so does Liam but will they be getting it in the next book?  I sure hope so.  I hadn’t previously read a book by this author before but if all of her books are like this one I will be placing her on my automatic read list from here on out.  I hope May comes around quickly because I need to see what is going to happen in Conviction.

Excerpt:

Aarabelle sits in her highchair as I feed her dinner. She’s growing so fast. Already she’s eating cereal and a little baby food. Soon she’ll be crawling and I have no one to celebrate with. Her father will never see these milestones and it breaks me apart.
“You should really lock the door,” Liam huffs as he throws his coat over the chair.
“But then I’d have to get up to let you in,” I state matter-of-factly and go back to feeding the baby, trying to put aside my worries. The fact is…this is reality. I have to deal with it.
“Uh huh. Hey, Pumpkin,” his eyes alight as he crouches down by Aara. It’s adorable hearing grown men use a baby voice. It gets a little softer and higher pitched.
The corners of her mouth lift and she throws her arms in the air when he gets close. My heart sputters seeing how happy she gets seeing him. Liam kisses her head and she giggles.
“At least someone is happy to see me,” he says playfully.
“I’d be happy if you brought me a present,” I joke.
He laughs and goes into the pocket of his coat. “Just so happens I did, but since that’s the only way you’ll be nice, I’ll hold on to this until you’ve earned it.”
Practically leaping out of my chair, I rush over. “What is it?” I try to peer around his back as he holds the mystery item.
Liam’s lips curl as he sees how much I want this. I don’t even know what it is. Jeez, I’m an idiot. “Nope. We eat first, then maybe you’ll get it.”
“Watch, it’s a freaking Pez dispenser or something stupid.”
“Guess you’ll have to be nice to find out.” He shoves the item into his back pocket and I fight the urge to reach and get it. “How was work?”
We spend the next thirty minutes going over my day and Jackson’s return. Liam never mentioned that they spoke, but he’s surprised to hear he’s in Virginia. After we finish the pizza, Liam somehow convinces me we should watch a movie. I get Aarabelle to bed and come down to find him sprawled out on the couch.
“By all means, make yourself comfortable.”
Liam pulls his beanie higher on his forehead and his eyes glimmer with amusement. He sits up and puts the TV on. “I picked the movie.”
“What?” I ask with mock incredulity. “It’s my house. Why do you get to pick the movie?”
“Ummm, I’m the guest.” He shrugs as if this should be an obvious answer.
I groan and lean back. “What crappy, shoot-‘em-up movie do I have to endure?”
“You’ll see. It’s a classic.”

Blog Tour: Kick By Carmen Jenner

When I was ten, my father indoctrinated me into the family.
A brotherhood who would fight, protect, and give their lives for one another. A club whose ties ran thicker than blood, murkier than the dirt and grime that tainted my soul. Stronger than the bonds that connected me to my own family.
A band of brothers, where loyalty was kept and paid in a currency of blood.
When I was twenty-seven, I betrayed that brotherhood.
I’ve spent every day since running, avoiding paying back that debt.
My name is Daniel Johnson.  I have betrayed everyone I ever loved.
And I’ll betray her too.
This is my story—if you’re screwed up enough to want to read it.

Warning: KICK contains graphic violence, profanity, drug use, and explicit sexual situations of a taboo nature. Intended for an 18+ audience only. Not intended for pussies.

I am going to expand on the warning the author gives above.  This is book has some really dark scenes and if you have rape triggers or abuse triggers you may want to proceed with caution.  I love a good dark read but there were some scenes in here that had me putting my kindle down for a few minutes and walking away before I could go further.  With all that being said, I must be sick and twisted in my head but I just kept going back for more.

I don’t want to go to deep into the book because I don’t want to give anything away, but the things that Kick has done, things that he witnessed, things that not just affected him, but someone close to him as well.  He has a way with crazy.  That sentence won’t make sense until you read the book, but trust me he is like the crazy whisperer.  His story isn’t pretty, it’s not even a diamond in the rough, it is raw, gritty, dark and disturbing.  Now I am not saying all those things only pertain to Kick.  Nope, but again you will have to read the book to see who and/or what I am talking about.

Please though, if dark reads aren’t for you, then don’t read the book.  If rape situations or drug use are triggers or hard limits, then please don’t read the book because while this is dark and disturbing at times it is a damn good book, one that still has me thinking about it days later.

Excerpt #1
“You gotta let go now, Princess. I gotta hand you over.”
Her panicked gaze meets mine. “He’ll shoot you.”
“No, he won’t.”
“Yes, he will.”
I smile down at her. “What are we just gonna stand here forever, you in my arms, your dad holding a gun to my head? If he shoots me, he shoots me. Ain’t nothing I can do about that, Princess. At least I’ll know I did one thing right.”
She takes a deep, shaky breath. “I’d be dead if it weren’t for you.”
I nod, because it’s true. If Slayer hadn’t come at a deal, Prez would’ve eventually killed her, and he’d have tortured her some more first. “Promise me somethin’?”
“What?”
“Get on your feet and then get the hell outta here. Prez will come looking for you again. He’s not a guy who likes to lose. Take as much money as you can, and get the fuck away from this life, otherwise you’re gonna wind up filling a body bag way too young.”
Lauren is wrenched away from me then. She screams as the Italian carts her off toward the clubhouse, flailing and slapping at him despite her injuries.
“Daniel!” she screams, reaching out toward me as he struggles to get her inside. Without thinking I take a step forward, but I’m attacked from behind. My knees go out from under me and I’m shoved face-first into the ground. Some heavy motherfucker sits down on my back. I buck, trying to unseat him, but I’m whacked in the back of the head until I stop.
“Well, isn’t that fuckin’ touching? The Angel scum, in love with my daughter? Didn’t I warn you away from her once before?” Slayer asks, circling me like a predator circles prey. The biker using me for a chair shoves his gun against the back of my skull.
“Yeah, I did,” Slayer continues, and he motions for the guy on top of me to force me to stand. I’m dragged up by the hair and presented to Slayer. “At the rally, where she fuckin’ went missin’!” His red, blotchy face almost touches mine. He’s so close I can see the blood vessels snaking out from the corners of his eyes. He’s fucking high. His daughter’s been locked up, raped, beaten, treated like a fuckin’ animal over some shit that she shouldn’t even have to know about, and the arsehole’s gettin’ high as a fuckin’ kite instead of findin’ her? He makes me sick. He’s everything I hate about the life. And he’s more than likely exactly where I’ll end up, because this is what we are—this is what livin’ in the club gets you: bitterness, enemies, and a shit-tonne of bad blood.

Release Blitz: Unsound By Chantal Fernando & M.N. Forgy

10424299_752266991516521_8573762505870465903_n

Two authors with novellas that you don't want to miss!

TIME AND TIME AGAIN by Chantal Fernando I always thought I had luck on my side. Things seemed to go in my favour, whether by will or by nature. But that luck just ran out. Jobless and on the verge of being homeless, I find a strength in me that I didn’t even know existed and discover an unlikely savior --- Tag. He avoids commitment like the plague, and starting anything with him will only lead to heartbreak. I know this. He knows this. So why am I still here? Oh, right. Because I want him more than I want my next breath. THE BROKEN PIECES OF US by M.N. Forgy Babs is no stranger to the MC world. As an ol’ lady, she takes the hell that comes with it and dishes it out times two. When things take a turn for the worst, it leaves her questioning just how equipped she is for the hell she lives. She thought her marriage with Locks was it; that she had it all. But the past has a way of sneaking up and tearing life apart. Finding herself trapped as Locks’ ol’ lady, with the threat she will be his till the grave, her world spirals out of control. The only person risking it all to save her is the last person she thought would care: Bull. President of the Devil’s Dust MC, Bull, is good at running women off and is even better at pissing off his brothers. When he sees the way his vice-president is treating his ol’ lady, he tries to keep his thoughts to himself. The one thing Bull insists on in his club is respect and loyalty: respect for the patch, respect for your brother, and loyalty to the club. However, after finding Babs in a harsh predicament after a run in with Locks, he can’t help but step in. Crossing lines and hurdling around life’s unpredictability, will they find refuge in each other or will they have to endure what life gives them? ***WARNING - This is not your typical happily ever after.

Unsound is a great anthology and fans of Chantal Fernando and M.N. Forgy need to make sure that they pick this one up.  I will note that for M.N. Forgy’s book The Broken Pieces Of Us, should be read after reading the other books in the Devil’s Dust series or there will be spoilers for the first two books.  Personally I loved seeing Bull and Babs’ story and even though I knew what would happen from the previous books it still broke me in two.  I know for me, I wished I could go back and rewrite what happens so that we get that HEA for them.  In Chantal Fernando’s book, Time And Time Again, you watch how one accidental meeting can set the course to so much more.  How finding that right person can fix all the things that are broken inside of you and as long as you open your eyes happiness could be standing right in front of you.

I love both of these authors and can’t wait to see what else they have in store for their readers in the future.  Unsound is available now so go grab it today!

Review: Five Miles (Gypsy Brothers #3) by Lili St. Germain

Another one bites the dust.  Another son dead by her hands, more pain for the bastard who deserves each second of heartbreak and pain that he feels.  Another piece of Sammi’s soul broken as well.  How much longer can her mission of vengeance continue before she is either found out by Dornan, or sent to hell by the devil himself for what she has done.
Sammi is breaking down both mentally and physically from all that she is doing.  She is losing weight, losing sleep and has almost lost her life.  Don’t even mention the other acts she has to perform just so Dornan doesn’t think she is behind the deaths of his precious sons.  She has to finish what she started, even if she ends up dead in the process.  It’s gonna be big and someone will go out with a bang, literally.  Even Jace, the one person who is the light in all the darkness is starting to push her away.  She never wanted to hurt Jace, she loves him still.

Jace is beginning to become suspicious of Sammi.  Since she has come around two of his brothers are dead, not that he cares about those bastards, but there is something about her that isn’t sitting right with him.  He may not be evil like the rest of his family, but he won’t hesitate either to protect himself.  Jace doesn’t want to see Sammi hurt, but is it because of his father or because he wants her for himself?

I cannot believe that we have to wait over a month for the next installment of the Gypsy Brothers series.  I so want to see who Sammi’s next victim will be.  If her and Jace will get closer or further apart.  If she will be able to continue her path of vengeance and destruction and keep her sanity in tack while she does it.  I am loving watching her pick off these pricks like it was a game of duck hunt, maybe that makes me just as sadistic as she is and if it does I am proud of it because these bastards deserve the same treatment if not worse for what they did.

Review: Six Brothers (Gypsy Brothers #2) by Lili St. Germain

One down, six to go.  Sammi has lied, cheated and began her payback on Dornan Ross.  His sons will pay for the sins of the father as well as their own and she can’t wait to watch the pain he feels destroy him.  That is, if it doesn’t destroy her first.
Sammi’s pursuit of vengeance against those who damaged her has just begun, but while she is acting out her revenge she is also being hurt at the same time.  She is fucking the father of her rapists and him being one as well.  Dornan is a sick fuck normally, add to it him grieving over the death of his favorite son, and he turns into someone the devil wouldn’t want to fuck with.  Sammi knows that she needs to watch her own back, protect herself as much as she can and get her vengeance before people figure out that it’s all her that’s bringing so much destruction to the Gypsy Brothers MC.

Jace is still unaware of Sammi’s true identity or plans, but he protects her as best as he can.  He likes Sammi, and tries to get her to leave his father.  He is her savior too many times to count, it’s almost like he is trying to make up for being unable to save Juliette.  Jace may be one of the nicer members and nothing like his brothers but you don’t want to cross him.
When the next brother comes to his death, suspicions on Sammi start and even Jace is looking at her differently.  She barely gets away with her life after she almost accidently dies along with the son she deemed her next victim.  Time is running out, one of these times she isn’t going to be able to con her way out of being suspected as the reason behind the deaths.

This series gets better and better and more mind fuck disturbing with every book and this is only the second book people!  I love this dark fucked up world that Lili St. Germain has created, I want to see each brother suffer as much as possible as well as Dornan.  The only one who I hope doesn’t get hurt is Jace, he is the good in a shit ton of bad, Sammi needs Jace, and I hope that by the end of this series they will be able to move forward with their lives together.

Review: Always By: Kindle Alexander

Born to a prestigious political family, Avery Adams plays as hard as he works. The gorgeous, charismatic attorney is used to getting what he wants, even the frequent one-night stands that earn him his well-deserved playboy reputation. When some of the most prominent men in politics suggest he run for senate, Avery decides the time has come to follow in his grandfather's footsteps. With a strategy in place and the campaign wheels rolling, Avery is ready to jump on the legislative fast track, full steam ahead. But no amount of planning prepares him for the handsome, uptight restaurateur who might derail his political future.

Easy isn't even in the top thousand words to describe Kane Dalton's life after his father, a devout southern Baptist minister, kicks him out of the family home for questioning his sexual orientation. Despite all the rotten tomatoes life throws his way, Kane makes something of himself. Between owning a thriving upscale Italian restaurant in the heart of downtown Minneapolis and managing his long-term boyfriend, his plate is full. He struggles to get past the teachings of his childhood to fully accept his sexuality and rid himself of the doubts brought on by his religious upbringing. The last thing he needs is the yummy, sophisticated, blond-haired distraction sitting at table thirty-four.

Always tells the story of Kane and Avery’s relationship from the start and plays out throughout their lives.  Avery and Kane’s relationship is intense from the start.  Avery can’t believe his attraction to Kane is so intense that he is speechless the first time they meet.  Kane is just as attracted to Avery but has no idea that he feels the same way.  The feelings between the two quickly turn into love and never fades, these two are soul mates.  They love hard, intensely and are there for each other during the good and bad times.  Their relationship starts back in the 70’s when being a gay man wasn’t as accepted as it is today.

You can feel the love between Kane and Avery and how much it has grown each year they are together.  They have a family, something that just made their relationship even stronger.  Neither one is ashamed of who they are, although at times Kane is torn because of his religious beliefs that he was raised in.  They support each other completely.  They will love each other always.  Always is a theme throughout the book and it is beautiful, to know that you will always love the person who holds your heart so truly that you know there will never be another, is the type of love everyone deserves to have in their lives.

Always is emotional, you will need tissues because it is heart breaking.  I cried big ugly sobbing tears.  There is so much emotion and love that you can't help but feel the pain that is felt in the book. Words just can’t express the total spectrum of emotions that I felt while reading Kane and Avery’s story.  Always just isn’t an emotional book, it is sexy too.  Kane and Avery never lose the heat they feel for each other, both are perfect in each other’s eyes and don’t let things cool down in the bedroom.

Kindle Alexander is quickly becoming one of my favorite m/m romance authors.  She shows that love whether that love is between a man and a woman, two men or two women, that it doesn’t matter what their sexual preference is as long as there is a strong bond between partners and that the love they have is strong and unbreakable.  Always is a book that shows the true beauty that is love, especially when it is an all consuming , soul merging love that not even death can sever.

Review: A Woman Gone Mad By Kimber S. Dawn

How many times can one woman’s heart be broken before it can no longer be healed and she goes mad from the pain?  Love and happy endings are only true in fairy tales, love is destructive, painful and at times deadly.

Lil’s heart has been broken one too many times, it won’t heal.  Her pain has sent her into a downward spiral that is so heart wrenching that you feel the madness take you over as it does her.  Your heart breaks right along with Lil’s.  You feel each and every piece shatter into smaller pieces that can never be healed again.  Betrayal, the loss of a love so obsessive that it turns destructive, meaningless sex, the chance of true love and happiness only for it to be ripped right out of her hands, and a second chance at love has made her take a path down a destructive spiral that she may not be able to reverse.

Every time Lil would suffer I felt like a knife was stabbing me in my own heart.  Each piece of her heart and her sanity breaking made me feel her pain.  Beginning with her first heart break you see that Lil will not have a smooth road to happiness but one that is filled with so many twists, turns, pot holes and bumps that it is a miracle that she is able to maneuver her life through it.  Lil tries to put her heart back together after each heart break but it’s only being held together by the tiniest amount of glue that even a small tap will break the pieces again.

When her first true love leaves and shatters her world completely you never think that Lil will be able to bring herself out of the depth of despair that she is in.  You finally think that maybe, just maybe her knight in shining armor that could make her fairytale come true will be the one to save her comes in to her life and for a while Lil is happy once more, that is until he plunges his sword into her heart as well.

When her first love, Leo, returns he helps bring the light back into her life and they begin their life together. But even the love of Leo can help her when she suffers a loss so heart breaking that she spirals out of control and pushes Leo away.  She hits such a low, one that has her ending her pain in a way that is final, you never think that she will be pulled from her madness, but the same love that has broken her heart and sanity is the one that pulls her from her madness and heals her heart and mind.

I can’t begin to tell you what this book made me feel, there is so much angst, heart break and pain that it is a total mind fuck.  I cried almost from the prologue alone and each time Lil’s heart broke I cried even more.  My emotions were on such a roller coaster that at times I had to let myself cry out the pain I felt.  To feel such despair and pain drained me both mentally and physically.  To feel such a low that the only choice you have is to end the pain is sadly for some the only way to make it end.

Kimber S, Dawn has written such an emotional, angst filled story that shows that love is painful, heart breaking and sometimes maddening.  I have a feeling a lot of people will connect with Lil’s pain and have felt how she has at times, this reviewer being one of them.  This is a must read and one of the best books I have read this year so far.
