Review Tour: The Shadows series by R.M. Alexander

The darkest secrets won't remain hidden.

Rachel Brackett arrives in Sullivan, Montana with simple goals: relocate, settle an estate, and manage her own antique store. Her parents and friends back home called it running away. That’s just fine with her.

Rachel’s curiosity leads her into the forest, and she finds creatures who know more about her ominous heritage than she does. The creatures only exist in nightmares – grotesque mutants and shapeshifters. They seek vengeance for hideous crimes in genetic engineering, and Rachel is the prime target for retribution. While Rachel searches for the truth behind the family she never knew, a bounty hunter stalks her every move. Only Leonardo, a figure shrouded in the shadows, offers protection. A were lion with the perfect blend of human and feline features. Terrifying. Impossible. Alluring.

When Rachel’s home is ripped apart and a friend attacked, it’s clear there is no safe haven. She is no longer running from her past, but trying to survive to make it to her future.

"Normal" is just a word, and one that no longer applies to Rachel Brackett's life in the Bitterroot Mountains.

Keeping her two lives in Sullivan, Montana isn't easy. Rachel struggles to protect those with the deepest secrets, and the only one helping to keep her sanity intact is Leonardo. When he disappears, Rachel's world tilts on a dangerous axis.

War with the Others is building, leaving Rachel and Justiz in a rush to find Leonardo.

Time is not on her side, and Rachel must find a way of reaching Leonardo, or risk those she cares the most about.

Rachel Brackett is living on the edge, and the view is exhausting.

The lines have been drawn. Rachel searches for ways of setting her adopted family free of the evil caused by Telov's experiments. Winning requires nothing less than full cooperation from all factions, leaving Rachel and Leonardo to unite forces bonded by hate. In the search, Rachel uncovers truths more crippling than any she has known, and threatens all that she has come to love.

The war has arrived, and anything less than success promises to forever poison the beauty of the mountains with the stench of death.

This review is going to cover Veil Of Secrecy, Dark Crossings and Revelations by R.M. Alexander.  I’m doing one review for the series so that I don’t give anything away because if you are a fan of this author or if you like paranormal suspenseful books then I think you will really enjoy reading these books.  Yes they do need to be read in order and the order I wrote above is the correct order.

I liked both Rachel and Leonardo’s characters.  Rachel inherited her grandmother’s home and just had dealt with the loss of her husband she had no idea what she was also inheriting besides the estate so to speak.  She had never met her grandparents so she had no idea what they had been doing.  Leonardo is a shifter and tries to protect Rachel as best as he can.  Their friendship blooms into something more even when danger is lurking.

One thing I want to stress about this series is that there are twist, turns, WTF moments as well as some romance as well.  If you are looking for a full on romance book then you may end up not liking this series, for something like this series romance really is kind of on the back burner to all the other things that are going on.  I got sucked into Veil of Secrecy quickly and I was happy that I had Dark Crossings and Revelations already at hand so I didn’t have to wait to see what would happen next.  This was a much needed change of pace for me from what I have been reading as of late and am extremely happy that I read these books.

Series Review: Ricochet By Heather C. Leigh

Rick "Ricochet" Brennan served eight years as an elite Marine special ops Force Recon soldier. After an injury, and the terrible memories from that night, he retires and goes to work for his former Command Officer, Howard "Mack" McEvoy, at his training center in Atlanta.

Sanctum MMA appears on the surface to be a normal gym, training elite fighters to be the best. Except each trainer, hand-picked by Mack, possesses a special background that allows Mack to run one of the best-kept secrets in the country.

When twenty-three year old Quinn Wallace finally escapes her abusive husband, she turns to her father’s old Marine Corps buddy, Mack, for help. Broken and skittish, Quinn finds herself surrounded by large, intimidating men— men who could easily overpower her. She avoids them the best she can, but when Rick turns out to be more than just a rough fighter with bruised knuckles, she finds herself wondering if she can allow herself to trust again.

Excerpt
“Hey,” he said calmly. “Why aren’t you resting?” Rick put his hands on her shoulders, gently massaging her arms.
Quinn’s eyes grew large and went to his gloved hands.
Fuck, she hates fighting. Now I know why she looks freaked out.
Rick yanked his hands away and took a step back. “I didn’t mean for you to see me fight, Quinn. I’m sorry.”
To his surprise, Quinn stepped forward, closing the distance Rick had put between them. He watched as she hesitantly lifted her arms, placing her hands on his sweat-slicked chest. Her eyes met his and his breath left in a sharp huff. The fear he had expected to see wasn’t there. No… Quinn’s eyes were dark and glistening with lust.
“I didn’t know that watching you fight would be so comforting. It makes me feel safe, and… turned on,” she murmured. Rick shivered as her hands ran down his torso, moving over each defined muscle until they were resting on either side of his waist.
“Turned on?” Rick swallowed, barely able to speak with Quinn touching him like that. She was only just about healed from the attack. He figured it would be months, if not longer before she’d be interested in pursuing anything physical.
“Yes, turned on.” Quinn’s fingers dug into Rick’s waist, her thumbs making small circles on the ‘v’ shaped ridges of his lower abs. Scorching waves of pleasure rippled down his spine, instantly making his cock come to life.
“Jesus,” he muttered softly. Using every last bit of willpower he had, Rick captured Quinn’s wrists, removing her hands from his body. “Not here, doll.” He glanced around, but none of the other fighters were looking their way. Still, he’d kill them if they saw the lust in Quinn’s eyes. That was for him, and him alone.
Quinn pouted, crossing her arms and glaring like a kid denied her favorite candy.
He couldn’t help himself. The sight of this tiny thing trying to look intimidating was funny. Rick laughed. “You’re too much, doll.” The corner of her mouth twitched up—it was just a hint of a smile, but it made Rick’s day. Quinn hadn’t smiled once since his team rescued her. Seeing some of her personality coming back flooded him with emotion.

Series Review:

The author broke the Ricochet series into three parts and instead of reviewing each one individually I am just going to do a review that covers all three parts.  I am going to keep this short and sweet.

Quinn is sweet and sassy but she has had a violent past that has shaped who she is today.  She has PTSD due to the violence she lived through because of her ex, so many people think that only military members suffer from it but anyone who has lived through something so traumatic such as abuse can suffer. Rick also suffers from PTSD but his is because of his time in the marines.  It is amazing how two people who have suffered in their own ways can come together and be what the other person needs to heal.

I am lucky because I did have all three parts of the series where I could read them back to back so the cliff hanger parts didn’t piss me off like it could have because I knew I didn’t have to wait to read the next part but I could understand how it might upset some people.  Overall, I liked this series I wanted to see where Quinn and Rick’s relationship went.  I am happy that I signed up to review it because if I hadn’t I might have missed out on a good read.
