Review: Playing Chase by Julie Prestsater

If you have not read the first 3 books in this series then there will be spoilers so be warned.

An Against The Wall novella ...

There are many words that have been used to describe Chase Marino: cheater, backstabber, dirt bag, heart breaker. He earned those titles cheating on his high school love Shelly and his co-worker Summer. He broke both their hearts and knows it’s his lot in life to make it up to them somehow. But while the ladies intend to make his life miserable, Chase is pretty good at doing it to himself. With his dad around treating him like a frat brother rather than a son, it’s easy for Chase to beat himself up over the shameful mistakes he made in the past.

That is until Tiffany Gutierrez, the new student teacher arrives. Feeling an immediate attraction to the young beauty Chase does everything in his power to fight it and do the right thing for once. But when Tiffany shows the attraction is mutual all bets are off. Chase soon realizes that while he’s teaching Tiffany how to be a good teacher, he’s learning a thing or two from her as well. Maybe it’s time to move on and let go of the past and realize that he may just deserve a real shot at love.

Chase, what can be said about him besides he is an asshole who cheats, lies and can’t seem to get over it when a girlfriend dumps his ass after he once again cheats.  I couldn’t stand Chase in the first 3 books, I kept saying to myself he is going to seriously start to pay for what he did in his past and oh boy does he ever. Let’s just say payback is a bitch and when you have 3 pissed off women after you, two you actually had relationships with, you are in for it. 

Tiffany is Chase’s student teacher and she sees Chase in a different light than the other women in his life.  Chase opens up to her like he never did before and she can’t help but want more from him than just being the student teacher he is supervising.  Tiffany doesn’t judge Chase, she sees what lies beneath the surface.  Will she be able to help Chase from repeating his past once more, or will she fall victim like the others and get her heart broken by him.

Now like I said before I hated Chase in the first 3 books, so when I started Playing Chase I didn’t have high expectations that I could ever like him.  Well, I don’t like him, I love him now.  When you find out his past and things he never shared before you have a better understanding of who Chase really is.  He honestly felt like he deserved what was happening to him by his exes and didn’t throw a fit because he viewed it almost as a penance for his actions.  When something happens that makes it look like he went back to his old ways to Tiffany you want to scream no it’s not what you think.  How he finally gets Tiffany to listen to him was great.  He needed Tiffany to open his eyes and show him that he is worthy of love and that he isn’t the asshole he comes across to be at times.

Playing Chase is the 4^th book in this series and as I warned earlier if you haven’t read the other books in this series first you need to big time.  You need to be able to see the entire picture to understand Chase now.  I loved this series and I can’t believe it took me so long to read it.  Put this entire series on your TBR lists people, I think you will enjoy them as much as I have.

Who was your favorite character to write and why? 

My favorite character to write in this series is Mel. She’s freaking hysterical. I loved writing every bit of

dialogue that came out of her mouth and all her thoughts. She is one sassy, sarcastic woman who isn’t afraid to let everyone know what she’s thinking. Not only is she the perfect match for Ty, but she’s a damn good friend too. She’s the best friend we could all hope to have.

What do your family and friends think about your choice of career?

They are overwhelmingly supportive. My sister tells everyone who will listen about my books, and even some people who don’t want to listen. Haha. Don’t let her catch you in a long line at a grocery store. She’ll bust out a Sharpie and right my name on your hand.

Who or what inspired the story?

Catty women. LOL! I work in an environment with a ton of women. And we can tend to be a little catty sometimes. Or territorial. Or just plain bitchy. One of my best friends at work is someone who I didn’t really get along with at first. It took us a couple years, actually, to warm up to each other. While I never thought she was a man-stealing whore, I guess you could say the idea of Summer is based on our rocky start at becoming friends.

What do you want people come away with when they read your work?

A smile. :D But seriously, I think what most readers love about my books and what some hate about them is that the drama is not drawn out for chapter after chapter. One of the things I love about romance is the guaranteed happily ever after. And you’ll definitely get that in my books and it usually doesn’t take long. Sure, there is conflict just like in real life. But that conflict doesn’t have to be a drag it out, beat it to death, knock it out, break your heart into a million pieces and then crap on it for good measure kind of thing.  So I guess I’d want them to know that it’s okay to just get over it, say you’re sorry, hug it out, have some great make-up sex, move on, and be happy.



What is something readers wouldn't know about you?
I love dipping my French Fries into a chocolate shake using my fool proof scooping method. You have to fold your fry in half first. Then, you use it as a spoon and scoop up a glob of thick milkshake before taking a delicious bite. Works best with fries from Wendy’s and a thick chocolate frosty. Perfection!
