Cover Reveal: Fighting Shadows By Aly Martinez

I come from a family of fighters. I always thought I’d follow in their shadows, becoming unstoppable in the ring. That changed the day I saved the life of a woman I loved, but could never have.
My brother hailed me as a hero, and my reward was a wheelchair.
Paralyzed, my life became an inescapable nightmare.
Until I met her.
Ash Mabie had a heart-stopping smile and a laugh that numbed the rage and resentment brewing inside of me. She showed me that even the darkest night still had stars, and it didn’t matter one bit that you had to lie in the weeds to see them.
I was a jaded asshole who fell for a girl with a knack for running away. I couldn’t even walk but I would have spent a lifetime chasing her.
Now, I’m on the ropes during the toughest battles of my life.
Fighting the shadows of our past.
Fighting to reclaim my future.
Fighting for her.

Prologue
Ash
“Where the fuck have you been?” a man’s voice growled as soon as I entered the conference room.

My eyes flashed to his for only a single second before I recognized them. The door had barely clicked behind me but I already wanted nothing more than to bolt. My heart raced and my mouth dried.

I had to get out of there.

“Um…” I stalled, giving myself time to formulate a plan.

“Sit. Down,” he ordered, pushing out the chair next to him, but there was no way I was getting that close.

“I’m good,” I said, taking a step backwards toward the door.

“Don’t even think about it,” he snapped. “I swear to God, if you so much as open that door…” His words may have trailed off, but the threat was clearly stated.

I swallowed hard, and slowly walked to the chair farthest away from him, perching on the very edge—waiting for just the right moment to escape.

He looked down at the name badge around my neck and quirked an eyebrow.

“Victoria?”

“You can call me Tori if it’s easier.” I tried to fake a smile, but it only seemed to infuriate him. He took several calming breaths, which did nothing to dampen the blaze brewing in his angry eyes.

“I’ve been looking for you, Ash.” He snarled my name.

“Oh, yeah? Well, mystery solved. Here I am.” I pushed back to my feet, but was halted when his fist pounded against the table. I jumped as my whole body flinched from the surprise.

When the room fell silent, I slowly looked back up to find him staring at me with a murderous glare. Even sitting down I could tell he was huge, and as he held my gaze, the tense muscles in his neck and shoulders strained against the cotton of his grey Henley. He blinked at me for several seconds before finding his voice again.

“You live in a homeless shelter,” he stated definitively, as if the words told a story all of their own.

And maybe they did.

“I work at a homeless shelter,” I quickly corrected.

Only he corrected me just as fast. “In exchange for a permanent place to live…In. A. Homeless. Shelter.” He enunciated every single syllable.

I looked away, because it was the truth.

A truth that I hated.

But the God’s honest truth nonetheless.

Tears welled in my eyes and I battled to keep them at bay.

My life was hard, but him being there made it infinitely harder. If I could just escape that room, I could disappear again. It wasn’t ideal, but neither was him showing up.

“I want you to leave.” I lied with all the false courage I could muster.

“I can’t do that. You stole something of mine.”

“Look, I don’t have your book anymore.”

A knowing smirk lifted one side of his mouth. “Liar,” he whispered, reaching into the chair beside him, revealing the tattered book and ceremoniously dropping it on the table.

My eyes went wide, and without a conscious thought, I dove across the table after it.

That was mine.

Not even he could have it.

Just as quickly as the book appeared, he snatched it away and grabbed my wrist.

I slid off the table and tried to pull my arm from his grasp. It was a worthless attempt though because even if he had suddenly released me, his blue eyes held me frozen in place.

“Three fucking years,” he seethed.

“I had to,” I squeaked out as the tears streamed down my cheeks.

“Three. Fucking. Years, Ash. You took something that belonged to me.” He released my arm and pushed to his feet.

My mouth fell open and a loud gasp escaped as he took two impossible steps forward.

Pinning me against the wall with his hard body, he lifted a hand to my throat and glided it up until his thumb stroked over my bottom lip. Using my chin, he turned my head, and dragged his nose up my neck, stopping at my ear.

Sucking in a deep breath, he released it on a gravelly demand. “And I want her back.”

My breath hitched.

I’d waited years to hear those words.

If only I could have trusted them.

“Flint, please.”

OTRCover   A murderer’s child…A foster child…A troubled teen…Gabriel ‘The Saint’ Vega has never had an easy life. Being shuffled from one foster home to another after his father murdered his mother, he found himself in and out of trouble with the law. Never giving a damn about himself, let alone anyone else, his life was spiraling out of control; fast. Until one man and one sport changed everything. Frankie Carbone taught Saint how to handle his anger and rejection; by fighting it out in the ring. On his way to stardom, Saint finds himself pushed into the spotlight and into the arms of more women than he can ever imagine; he’s completely content with one night stands and random sex. Then Salem Harris comes walking into his life and changes his game plan. Saint finds himself wanting Salem in all the ways that scare him. She is off limits; taken. But that doesn’t stop Saint from going after what he wants, and he wants her. Frankie showed Saint a new way of life with Boxing, but will Salem give him the one thing he's never known – love? Will Saint find himself fighting for the one thing he thinks he doesn't deserve or will Salem end up breaking his heart? Gabriel ‘The Saint’ Vega has had to fight for every good thing he's gotten in his life. Can he go the distance?

Gabriel “The Saint” is training for his next boxing match, but that hasn’t stopped him from drinking and man whoring around.  He knows he needs to take things seriously, his trainer who is like a father to him makes sure to ride his ass daily.  Gabriel never had any intentions of settling down, well that is until Salem knocks him down for the count.  He wants her, but she wants nothing to do with him.  I loved how he would be a smart ass to her and not let her bitchy persona and attitude stop him from trying to get her.  Only problem?  Her boyfriend is now his sponsor.  Add to that his past and he doesn’t think he would ever be good enough for Salem.

Salem wants nothing to do with Gabriel.  She can be stuck up and judgmental, and oh boy she is a massive bitch.  She also appears to care less about anything boxing related.  While she appears to be this stuck up bitch, there is more to Salem than it seems.  Her relationship with her boyfriend is anything but perfect, she’s trying hard to make her parents proud, all while losing more of who she really is deep down.

On The Ropes is the first book in the Down For The Count series and while it was good, for me it just wasn’t great.  I loved the idea of the book and it kept my attention but at the same time I was bored if that makes any sense.  I wanted Gabriel at times to put Salem in her place when she would treat him so shitty and have more self-respect for himself for his own self-worth.  The ending, well let’s just say I was pissed and not a happy reviewer.  Luckily for me I had the second book ready to start right away.  It wasn’t even the cliff-hanger aspect that made me made, no it was what Gabriel and Salem do that made me want to slap them both.

Now, while I didn’t overall love On The Ropes, it still is a good book.  I love sport themed books, and boxers are one of my favorite.  While it may not have worked for me overall, it may work for you so still check this one out, form your own opinion and give it a try.

Life has been a roller coaster for Gabriel ‘The Saint’ Vega. From surviving a hellish childhood, to reuniting with his lost brother, only to hit the struggle of helping him battle his drug addiction. Boxing saved Gabriel’s life, and just when his career hits the fast track, he finally finds love with Salem; at least for a short time.

Social differences, obligations, and misguided good intentions tore Gabriel and Salem apart before they could ever really get started. Will Gabriel be able to save his brother from the whirlpool of addiction that threatens to drag him under? Is Salem capable of breaking away from the ropes that bind her to doing what’s expected rather than what and whom she desires? Can Gabriel convince Salem that their mutual feelings are worth fighting for, and that together, they will be able to go the distance?

Going The Distance is the second book in the Down For The Count series and it picks up about three months after On The Ropes finishes.  Gabriele and Salem are miserable but it’s due to their own actions.  I really wanted to just scream and be like your reasoning is so stupid just get together already.  I wish I could say that I wasn’t as frustrated with these two as I was in the first book, but that would be a massive lie.

Gabriel has tried to forget Salem and Salem is still with her douche bag boyfriend, who still is Gabriel’s sponsor.  However, now these two are together but not.  Add to this stress, Gabriel is training for an even bigger fight, as well as taking care of his brother who is still recovering from his addiction.  Salem wants to end it with her boyfriend but keeps coming up with excuse after excuse not to.  I want to say that I was mature while reading her excuses but I can’t, I called her plenty of names in my head and possibly out load at various times.

When Gabriel suffers a tragedy, one that made me even cry, I honestly wasn’t sure what could happen next but he kept having hit after hit (and I am not talking about the type that happens in the ring, I am talking about the emotional type) that I was wondering when he would finally break.  Luckily Salem was there for him, finally.

I did like this one better than the first book, but I was still at times aggravated and bored.  I wanted Gabriel to finally find happiness and the peace that he deserves and he does.  I again will say to give this series a chance, I am not sure if the author plans on writing more books in the series or not but if she does I would pick it up and check it out for sure.

***

My heart was breaking in the prologue alone. The book opens with a young Gabriel and his brother watching as their father stands in court for the murder of their mother. I wanted to wrap my arms around the boys and protect them from the cruelty they've had to endure. Fast forward to their adult lives and I found fate took them in two different directions. While Gabriel found a guardian angel in Frankie that took him off his self destructive path, Gabriel's brother wasn't so lucky.

Gabriel may have had a crap childhood, but Frankie and boxing did him a world of good. He's a good man, helps other at risk youth and is a rising star in amateur boxing. He's content with life and where it's going. Until Salem enters his gym. Her beauty attracts him. The fact that she's in a relationship, her coldness and indifference to him only fuel him on. She's a challenge.

Salem is on a destructive path herself, but just doesn't realize it. For whatever reason she stays with her douchebag boyfriend. As much as he wears her heart down with hurt and mistrust she refuses to leave the asshat. Instead she clings to loyalty and the love she's sure he has for her. Ugh! I wanted to shake her around and shove his cheating ways into her face till the light bulb goes on. She's suspected for a long time that he cheats, but never had proof and hoped he would change. Seriously! You're not married to him. Move on! But their families have a history, so it's not that easy for her.

After a moment of weakness and letting her guard down, Salem and Gabriel actually form a quick friendship. There's attraction between them both. But, she's not free to explore it. These two can actually be good together. The only thing really stopping them is her. She's blocking her own path to happiness.

We meet up with Gabriel's brother again. Life hasn't been good to him. Ms. Cervone made me cry at one point. Now that Gabriel is an adult though, he's doing what he can for his brother and vows to not ever leave him again. Old friends step in to help provide a better outcome for him.

This one leaves off on a cliff. Things are unresolved in the end and left my heart feeling sad for Gabriel. It's a good start to a new series. I'm looking forward to the next one. I want to see what progress his brother has made and if Salem has managed to pull her head out of her ass and get it right.

Excerpt
My thoughts drift to creating a fantasy of Salem and me. We’re in the locker room at Frankie’s gym and I’m all hot and sweaty from training. I have her pinned up against the wall and she’s completely defenseless against me, but she’s into it. Her skirt is up around her waist and the little piece of fabric she calls underwear is interfering with what I want. I grind my body up against hers and my dick is swelling as I rub up on her thigh. My hands roam freely over her body, finally landing on her tight ass. Our tongues are dueling and I’m drunk on her taste. The scent of the perfume or body spray she’s wearing is tormenting me until I’m at my breaking point. “God, Salem, you smell so fucking good; it makes me wanna fuck you until you can’t remember your own name,” I growl. Her hands tighten in my hair and a stronger wave of her scent drifts into my nose as I inhale. My chest is heaving at my thoughts and my breathing is labored. Sliding my hand into my boxers, I adjust myself to get more comfortable and my thoughts are almost immediately back with Salem. Her perfectly manicured nails are clawing at my back now as I dig my fingers into her legs. I kiss her neck roughly as she pants in my ear, “Make me come, Saint.” Then she bites my earlobe and I lose control. I’m so anxious to have her that I rip off the expensive panties she’s wearing and slam my cock into her like her pussy is my saving grace. I smile when she screams in pleasure as she comes apart in my arms.

Unconsciously, my hand slides back down into my boxers until it meets my aching erection. This time I begin stroking myself; I just can’t help it. Salem…there’s just something about her…I’m not sure if it’s her beauty or the fact that I’ll have to work to get her. But, whatever it is, she will be mine.
