When a rapist is terrorizing the women of Hensley
University, Everleigh “Ev” and her friend Sam attend the self-defense class
offered by the university to help protect themselves. When Everleigh is kicked out by the instructor,
Hunter, because of her sarcasm in the first session, she is not only
embarrassed but pissed off at the same time.
When Hunter shows up in her classes he is like a bad rash, one that just
won’t go away. The two begin to banter
back and forth and eventually a friendship begins. The problem besides the rapes on campus? Ev begins to fall in love with Hunter even
though he has told her he can only offer friendship right now. When the attacks continue and get worse, will
it bring Ev and Hunter closer or rip them apart?
Everleigh is a smartass of the highest level. Her comebacks and remarks are so cunning and
hilarious at times that you wouldn’t think anyone would be her match. Ev hasn’t had an easy life, after the death
of her mother she has only let a handful of people in, her best friend and roommate
Sam being the only one who is the closest to her. When she decides that her nemesis Hunter
needs to be in their group of friends, she quickly turns from hilarious sarcastic
bitch to friend. Her feelings for Hunter
continues to grow even though she knows that he has said he doesn’t have time
for a relationship with her. I felt so
bad for Ev, when she finally opens up to Hunter, during a time that was
extremely emotional for her only for him to throw the I have no time for a
relationship excuse in her face yet again.
"We played hot potato with my heart—me throwing it to
him, him tossing it back to me. Every time the music stopped, I was always the
one holding my bruised organ."
Hunter, the bastard who dared kick Ev out of his self-defense
course, is just as funny as Ev is with his comebacks. He literally is her equal when it comes to
smart ass comments or retorts to snarky remarks to him. He makes it clear from the start that he only
has time for a friendship with Ev, nothing more. The closer they get it seems like they have a
relationship that’s beyond friendship but not quite a real relationship either. He walks away from Ev when she opens her heart
to him and he yet again reminds her about not having time for a relationship
right now.
When more attacks happen and a very viscous one occurs, as a
woman you can feel the terror that they felt knowing that they could be the
next victim. You feel for each one of
the victims as if you knew them personally and when you find out more details
than anyone should ever want to know about the attacks and those involved you
want to castrate the bastard for attacking the victims.
I loved Everleigh’s character. She is sarcastic, at times bitchy, but is
also a true friend. She isn’t afraid but
at the same time she is. Hunter is her
perfect match. He takes her
sarcastically worded insults and throw his own comebacks without missing a
beat. Watching Ev get frustrated at
times was as funny as what she would say to Hunter to begin with. You watch the relationship that isn’t a
relationship grow and you want these two together. When Hunter once again tells Ev that they can’t
have a relationship it is painful because you just know these two are meant for
each other. I will say this, that Hunter
is more than what he seems, now take that as you will, it is not necessarily a
bad thing, you just have to read it and see for yourself.
When I first started to read Only For You, I will admit I wasn’t sure how I was going to end up
liking this book. If you are looking for
a book filled with sex, romance and happily ever after’s for all involved this
is not the book for you. It at times is
hilarious but it is also dark due to the rapes of the women. What this book does include is a friendship
that is more than what it seems, secrets, heartbreak, and healing. When I finished reading it, I realized that I
really liked it. It is a really good
book, one that even as typing this has stuck with me days later. Genna Rulon has written a book that stays
with you after you finish, one that shows that not everything is what it seems
and those you think you know, you don’t know as well as you think you do.
