Crushed by a broken
heart ten years ago, Cleo Tanner walked away from her acting dreams and
now leads a quiet, secluded life in Seattle. Sylvia, her best friend
from college, is trapped in a loveless marriage, distraught by her
inability to conceive a child – until an adoption agency owner in
relentless pursuit of Cleo offers to help.
Just as Sylvia begins to experience a profound love that only a mother can feel, a detective approaches Cleo with disturbing questions about the adoption agency. Determined to protect her friend, Cleo jumps into a dangerous investigation that forces her to confront the ghosts of her past.
Bestselling author Tess Thompson, whose debut novel Riversong touched the hearts of readers worldwide, delivers a captivating and suspenseful tale of the possibilities that await us in life and in love – if we can find the courage to get off the sidelines.

I, like Cleo Tanner, studied theatre at USC.
Originally there were three female characters but one of
them was cut in my initial draft because it made the story too complicated.
However, Becky, is a fantastic character and may end up with a book of her own.
She’s a secret erotica writer posing as a freelance journalist and has a large
personality. I’ll leave it at that.
The working title for Caramel
and Magnolias was “Pea Soup”. My publisher quickly squelched that title,
although I was quite attached to it, in that it described both the weather of
the Oregon coast at times and the foggy way all the characters are living their
lives.
Peter’s physical appearance was inspired by the actor Simon
Baker. I have a huge crush on him.
Cleo’s appearance was inspired by my real life friend,
Jennifer Barnes. She’s absolutely beautiful and will be mortified I mentioned
her in this post!
Cleo Tanner and Peter Ball appear, briefly, in the sequel to
Riversong, Riverbend. Something
amazing will happen to Cleo in the third book in the River Valley series.
