Review: Darkness Rises by Dianne Duvall

Dianne Duvall has created an amazing world where vampires, immortals and others live alongside humans. Only humans don’t know it!

Darkness Rises is another story filled with action, intrigue, betrayal, and secrets. Oh and romance. Don’t forget the romance.

Krysta is a gifted one who has been fighting vampires on her own. She’s a regular Buffy!

Then there’s Etienne. He’s been around for quite a while and he’s Immortal. Together, they’re unstoppable!

I really like this series. It’s not just a vampire romance. It’s an entire world where anything can and does happen. It’s not the typical bad vampire versus good vampire. It’s an entire war being fought between vampires, immortals and humans. Only you sometimes aren’t sure who’s on your side and who’s the enemy.

With each story the plot gets a bit more complicated. There were some real eye-opening reveals in this one. With each subsequent book, I become more and more intrigued.

With Darkness Rises, I really enjoyed watching Etienne’s and Krysta’s romance. It was unconventional and completely different than most romances. It was perfect for them both.

With the introduction of Krysta and her gift to the group has introduced a whole new set of questions. We got a few more answers but we now have some new questions.  I’m looking forward to finding out more.

Review: Phantom Shadows by Dianne Duvall

Seems I’ve been on a paranormal kick lately! What can I say, I love shapeshifters, vampires and witches! They’re so much fun! There’s so much you can do with them!

Dianne Duvall has created a world where there are Immortals and Vampires. And yes, there is a difference. I really like that she’s made this distinction between them. It’s neat to have conflict without it being bad vampires versus good vampires.

Now, the Immortal Guardians Series needs to be read in order. There’s back history that really helps the story flow and makes it easier to connect with the characters. Now each book is a complete story within itself, but there is an overall story that flows through all of them. Reading the books out of order will make it difficult to follow everything going on. And believe, there’s a lot going on. Not too much to convolute the story, but there’s a lot!

In each of these stories, we get to see the past couples. We don’t just get their story and then they disappear only to make brief appearances. They’re actually integral to each story.

In addition to the Immortals and vampires we have something else in the story. No, I’m not telling. You’ll have to read to find out what it is. But, this addition adds a new layer to the story. It makes me wonder if we’ll see more in later books.

In Phantom Shadows we get to see Dr. Melanie Lipton and Sebastian get together. It’s fun to watch because Sebastian, or Bastian as he’s called, is a real asshole! He lives to antagonize the other Immortals. But the other Immortals have more than that to dislike Bastian.

Melanie is the perfect compliment to Bastian. She’s fierce and willing to stand up to people in defense of Bastian. He’s never had that before and it just wreaks havoc on him. I think the neatest thing about Bastian was watching how his gift affected him when he was around Melanie. It just made things that much hotter.

The chemistry between Melanie and Bastian was great. I liked that she didn’t take any crap off Bastian and pushed him. She didn’t take no for an answer! I loved that she was sometimes the aggressor with bad-boy Bastian!

I’m really looking forward to finding out more about the Immortals! With each books something new is revealed and it makes them that much more interesting!
