I'm seriously kicking myself in the ass for waiting to read Lori Foster. I've been following her for years now, buying her books here and there but never getting around to reading them until now. I moved recently, so all my stuff is in storage and will be for a while. Sadly, I can't get to my Lori books now. I'm going to call that book karma. Yes, I just made that up!
Getting Rowdy was pretty much everything I look for and love in my reads. With a moving, well thought out plot, Lori Foster took the time to create and develop an actual relationship between the hero and heroine. For me, that is big. I absolutely hate reading inst-love/insta-lust stories. It's just not believable or easy to connect to in my opinion. It takes time to build real feelings toward someone, and Lori did that beautifully. Add in a little suspense, realistic characters and some heavy sexual tension and BOOM! You got yourself a winner!
Rowdy is a hero who knows exactly what he wants and isn't afraid to say it. Confident, yet slightly arrogant but sexy as hell, Rowdy is my kind of man! He's a upfront about everything, not worried in the slightest about hurting feelings. Rowdy's tough as nails and has reason to be- His childhood was deeply traumatic. Forced to grow up early and raise his sister, Rowdy grew alligator skin and put on a brave face while hurting inside for many years. The emotion was gut wrenching and came straight off the pages! At times it even hurt to read.
Avery is all smiles but very evasive. She doesn't give anything away about her past and wants to keep it that way. She works and lives in a seedy part of town and is content as much as she can be. But the past she's trying to run from is catching up to her. The phone calls and suspicious activity are putting her on edge and Rowdy notices. He pushes himself past Avery's invisible wall and plants himself securely inside making sure to keep her safe. He knows all too well about being on the run and what it entails.
Once inside, Avery begins to fight her feelings more and more for Rowdy. She's not the type that does one night stands and surely isn't going to be another one of Rowdy's conquest, thankfully. I do not like easy heroines one bit. With them working so closely together, Avery is able to see the true man Rowdy is under all that armor and allows herself to fall for him just when things get hot.
Getting Rowdy is a true standalone novel. I read it with ease without having ever read the first two books. Only now I'm dying to get my hands on them and see where it all began! It's no wonder Lori is loved and followed by so many. She's clearly an author with an expressive mind who writes page turning stories- And I'm able to tell that with just one book.
