Review: Defaint by Pamela Clare

To sum it up: Major Connor MacKinnon despises his commander, Lord William Wentworth, beyond all other men. Ordered to rescue Wentworth’s niece after the Shawnee take her captive, he expects Lady Sarah Woodville to be every bit as arrogant and contemptible as her uncle. Instead, he finds a brave and beautiful lass in desperate peril. But the only way to free Sarah is for Connor to defeat the Shawnee warrior who kidnapped her—and claim her himself.

Torn by tragedy from her sheltered life in London, Lady Sarah is unprepared for the harshness of the frontier— or for the attraction she feels toward Connor as he guides her first through the consummation of their forced union and then through the dangers of the wilderness. I’ll start off by saying that this book definitely didn’t disappoint! Pamela Clare does it again with the third book in her MacKinnon’s Rangers books! I won’t go into much detail in this review, because so much happens in this novel and I just don’t want to give much away- I went into this story not knowing what obstacles Connor and sweet Sarah were going to face, which in my opinion made me treasure the story that much more.

Connor is such a drool-worthy hero… (as is all of the MacKinnon brothers) …like his brothers, he loves selfishly and unconditionally. He rescues Sarah from a harsh fate- and in the midst of it all, he finds himself falling head-over-heels in love with his greatest enemy’s niece. And therein lays the most obvious problem… a problem that leaves both Sarah and Connor feeling that they both have to walk away from each other and the love that they both feel for one another.

Sarah is such a sweet heroine, and I loved everything about her character. She lived such a sheltered life, and definitely not the most pleasant. The only love she had ever known was for her music, and even that came with its price to pay. She showed so much strength and courage when faced with many situations, that even the bravest would crumble during. But through it all, she blossomed into a woman who learned to stand up for what she wanted and believed in, no matter what the cost.

These three MacKinnon brothers are hard not to fall in love with. They’re not only loyal, but they each have such a passion about them that’s deep in their blood, and a sense of honor that never wavers. They’ll never hesitate to do what’s right in their heart, especially when it comes to their women- good Lord, I can’t even count the number of times these brothers had me swooning. Through this story, you’re really able to see that Pamela Clare takes great pride in her work- her characters are so beautifully created, and never once do they lose their individuality. His Immensity… *cough* …I mean, Wentworth… continued to give me those love-to-hate feelings that’s ever present in the MacKinnon’s Rangers series. And we even caught a few glimpses of Annie, Amalie, Iain, Morgan, and Joseph… all of which have an undeniable trust and love for one another, that never once went away during their fight for their lives and survival. Pamela Clare definitely deserves the highest praises with this book, and it’s not one you want to miss. =)

PS: Even though this is the third book in the MacKinnon’s Rangers series, I don’t think anyone would have problems reading this as a stand-alone. HOWEVER… with that being said, you’re going to want to read these books in order- it really helps you to get to know and understand each and every character on such a personal level, which makes these books all the more wonderful… if that’s even possible. =)
